Direct and Indirect Speech Essentials
"Transform statements and questions into reported speech with accurate tense changes and pronoun adjustments."
A Today you'll learn
- Understand the difference between direct speech (quoted words) and indirect/reported speech.
- Apply tense shift rules (simple present -> simple past; present continuous -> past continuous).
- Change pronouns and time/place adverbs appropriately (today -> that day, now -> then).
B Let's understand
Direct Speech quotes the exact words spoken by a person, enclosed within quotation marks (e.g., He said, "I am tired."). Indirect Speech (or Reported Speech) conveys the message of the speaker without quoting their exact words (e.g., He said that he was tired.). When converting from direct to indirect speech, several systematic changes occur: 1) Quotation marks and commas are removed, and the conjunction "that" is usually introduced. 2) Pronouns shift to match the perspective (I becomes he/she). 3) If the reporting verb is in the past tense (said), the verb tense shifts back one step into the past (am -> was; write -> wrote; have done -> had done). 4) Words indicating closeness in time and place shift to distance (today -> that day; here -> there; now -> then).
C See it step by step
- Step 1: The reporting verb "said" is in the past tense.
- Step 2: Remove quotation marks and insert conjunction "that".
- Step 3: Change pronoun "I" to "she".
- Step 4: Shift verb "like" (simple present) to "liked" (simple past). Final: Meera said that she liked reading mystery books.
- Step 1: Insert "that" after reporting verb.
- Step 2: Pronoun "We" changes to "they".
- Step 3: Present continuous "are playing" shifts to past continuous "were playing".
- Step 4: Time word "today" changes to "that day". Final: Arjun said that they were playing a chess match that day.
