Simple Machines and Mechanical Advantage
"See how levers, pulleys, and ramps make heavy work easier."
A Today you'll learn
- Understand what simple machines are and how they make work easier and safer
- Identify the six classical simple machines: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle, wedge, screw
- Spot simple machines in everyday tools (scissors, bottle openers, ramps, door knobs)
B Let's understand
A simple machine is a basic mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force, making work easier and faster with less human effort. There are six classical simple machines: 1. Lever: A rigid bar pivoting on a fixed point called a fulcrum (e.g., seesaw, crowbar, scissors). 2. Inclined Plane: A sloped surface or ramp used to roll heavy loads upward instead of lifting vertically. 3. Pulley: A grooved wheel with a rope or cable, used to lift buckets from wells or hoist flags. 4. Wheel and Axle: A larger wheel connected to a central shaft (e.g., steering wheel, door knob, bicycle pedal). 5. Wedge: Two inclined planes meeting at a sharp edge to split or cut things (e.g., axe, knife, needle). 6. Screw: An inclined plane wrapped spirally around a cylinder to fasten materials together tightly.
C See it step by step
- Lifting vertically requires overcoming the full weight of the barrel against gravity.
- An inclined plane spreads the work over a longer sloping distance, requiring far less pushing effort at any moment.
- This mechanical advantage makes the task manageable.
- Scissors combine two simple machines.
- The handles and blades form two first-class levers pivoting around a central screw fulcrum.
- The sharp cutting blades act as wedges to slice paper and fabric.

Key idea 1
Simple machines reduce effort by multiplying force or changing force direction.
The six simple machines are
The six simple machines are: lever, inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge, screw.
Key idea 3
A lever pivots on a fixed point called a fulcrum.
Key idea 4
An inclined plane (ramp) reduces lifting effort over a longer distance.
Complex machines (bicycles
Complex machines (bicycles, cars) are combinations of multiple simple machines.
