Large Numbers up to Lakhs
"Read, write, expand and compare 5- and 6-digit numbers using the Indian place value system."
A Today you'll learn
- Read and write 5-digit and 6-digit numbers in the Indian system (Ones, Thousands, Lakhs periods)
- Place commas correctly according to periods (e.g., 3,45,218)
- Write large numbers in standard, expanded, and word forms and compare them
B Let's understand
In Class 4, we advance into 5-digit and 6-digit numbers up to lakhs! In the Indian numbering system, place values are grouped into periods separated by commas. From right to left: the Ones period has three places (Ones, Tens, Hundreds); the Thousands period has two places (Thousands, Ten Thousands); and the Lakhs period has two places (Lakhs, Ten Lakhs). Therefore, commas are placed after the hundreds place (3 digits from right) and then after every 2 digits: e.g., 4,82,519 (Four lakh eighty-two thousand five hundred nineteen). The smallest 6-digit number is 1,00,000 (one lakh), and the greatest 6-digit number is 9,99,999.
C See it step by step
- Group into periods: 5 (Lakhs), 42 (Thousands), 380 (Ones).
- Word form: Five lakh forty-two thousand three hundred eighty.
- Expanded form: 5,00,000 + 40,000 + 2,000 + 300 + 80.
- Start from right: count 3 digits (215), place comma.
- Count next 2 digits (84), place comma.
- Result: 7,84,215 (Seven lakh eighty-four thousand two hundred fifteen).
