Four-Digit Numbers and Place Value
"Reading, expanding and mastering thousands up to 9,999."
A Today you'll learn
- Read, write, and identify thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones in 4-digit numbers
- Write numbers up to 9,999 in standard form, word form, and expanded form
- Compare and arrange 4-digit numbers in ascending and descending order
B Let's understand
4,725 = 4,000 + 700 + 20 + 5
Four-digit numbers begin at 1,000 (one thousand) and go all the way up to 9,999 (nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine). Each digit in a 4-digit number has a place: Thousands (Th), Hundreds (H), Tens (T), and Ones (O). The place value of a digit is the value it holds based on its position. For example, in 4,725, the 4 is in the thousands place and has a value of 4,000. In expanded form, we write 4,725 as 4,000 + 700 + 20 + 5. To compare two 4-digit numbers, compare the thousands first; if they match, compare the hundreds, then tens, and finally ones.
C See it step by step
- Identify places: 6 Thousands, 3 Hundreds, 8 Tens, 4 Ones.
- In words: Six thousand three hundred eighty-four.
- Expanded form: 6,000 + 300 + 80 + 4.
- Compare thousands: Both have 5 thousands (5,000 = 5,000).
- Compare hundreds: Both have 4 hundreds (400 = 400).
- Compare tens: 5,420 has 2 tens (20), while 5,409 has 0 tens (0).
- Since 2 tens > 0 tens, 5,420 > 5,409.
