Subtraction
"Subtract two- and three-digit numbers, with and without regrouping."
A Today you'll learn
- Subtract 2-digit and 3-digit numbers without borrowing
- Subtract with borrowing (regrouping)
- Solve simple word problems using subtraction
B Let's understand
Subtraction means taking one number away from another to find the difference. We subtract starting from the ones place. When the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, we borrow 1 from the next place to make it bigger.
C See it step by step
Example 1: Worked example
- 486 - 253 = 233 (ones: 6-3=3, tens: 8-5=3, hundreds: 4-2=2)
Example 2: Worked example
- 532 - 178 = 354 (ones: 2-8, borrow: 12-8=4; tens: 2-7, borrow: 12-7=5; hundreds: 4-1=... )
D Your turn
What is 62 - 27?
Look back at "Let's understand" above for a clue.
E Ready to practise?
Always subtract the ones column first
Always subtract the ones column first.
Key idea 2
Borrow 1 from the next place if the top digit is smaller.
Key idea 3
The result of subtraction is called the difference.
Key idea 4
Subtracting zero from a number does not change it.
Key idea 5
Check subtraction by adding the difference back to the smaller number.
