Multiplication
"Understand multiplication as repeated addition and equal groups."
A Today you'll learn
- Understand multiplication as repeated addition
- Understand multiplication as equal groups
- Recall multiplication facts up to 5 x 10
B Let's understand
Multiplication is a quick way of adding the same number many times. When we have equal groups of things, we can multiply instead of adding again and again. For example, 3 groups of 4 apples is the same as 4 + 4 + 4, which we write as 3 x 4.
C See it step by step
Example 1: Worked example
- 3 x 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
Example 2: Worked example
- 5 x 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
D Your turn
