Division

"Share a quantity equally and understand division as the opposite of multiplication."

FREE TOPIC 3 learning goals · Class 2 · Maths · Topic 5

A Today you'll learn

  • Understand division as sharing equally
  • Understand division as the opposite of multiplication
  • Divide small numbers evenly

B Let's understand

Division means sharing a quantity into equal groups. If we have 12 sweets and share them equally among 3 friends, each friend gets 4 sweets. Division undoes multiplication: since 3 x 4 = 12, we know 12 divided by 3 is 4.

C See it step by step

Example 1: Worked example
  1. 12 ÷ 3 = 4 (12 shared into 3 equal groups gives 4 each)
Example 2: Worked example
  1. 20 ÷ 5 = 4 (because 5 x 4 = 20)
