Shapes and Spatial Understanding
"Explore circles, squares, triangles and playful shapes around us."
A Today you'll learn
- Identify basic 2D shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle
- Recognise shapes in everyday objects (clocks, doors, sandwiches, coins)
- Use position and spatial words: inside/outside, top/bottom, on/under, near/far
B Let's understand
Circle · Square · Triangle · Rectangle
Shapes are everywhere around us! A circle is round and curved with no corners, like a coin or a full moon. A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners, like a slice of pizza. A square has 4 equal straight sides and 4 corners, like a carrom board or a dice. A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners, with opposite sides being equal, like a classroom door or a notebook. We also use spatial words to describe where things are: a bird sits on top of a tree, shoes go under the bed, and toys are kept inside the toy box.
C See it step by step
- A slice of pizza has 3 sides.
- It has 3 pointed corners (vertices).
- A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners is a triangle.
- Both squares and rectangles have 4 straight sides.
- In a square, all 4 sides are strictly equal.
- The shape is a square.
D Your turn
E Ready to practise?
Key idea 1
A circle is round with zero straight sides and zero corners.
Key idea 2
A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners.
Key idea 3
A square has 4 equal straight sides and 4 corners.
Key idea 4
A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners with opposite sides equal.
Spatial words describe positions
Spatial words describe positions: top/bottom, inside/outside, near/far.
