Addition within 20

"Add single-digit numbers using fingers, pictures, and simple number lines."

FREE TOPIC 3 learning goals · Class 1 · Maths · Topic 2

A Today you'll learn

  • Understand addition as putting things together or adding more
  • Add numbers up to 20 using real objects, fingers, and pictures
  • Solve simple word problems using the plus (+) and equals (=) signs

B Let's understand

Addition means combining two or more groups to find out how many there are in all. We use the plus sign (+) to show addition and the equals sign (=) for the answer. For example, if you have 4 red balloons and your friend gives you 3 blue balloons, you now have 4 + 3 = 7 balloons altogether! When you add 0 to any number, the number stays the same because you did not add anything new (5 + 0 = 5).

C See it step by step

Example 1: There are 5 birds on a branch. 4 more birds fly in and land on the branch. How many birds are there now?
  1. Start with 5 birds.
  2. Add 4 more birds: 5 + 4.
  3. Count forward from 5: 6, 7, 8, 9.
  4. There are 9 birds in all (5 + 4 = 9).
Example 2: What is 10 + 6?
  1. 10 is one full ten.
  2. Add 6 ones to 10.
  3. 1 ten and 6 ones make the number 16.
  4. So 10 + 6 = 16.
