FREE TOPIC 3 learning goals · Class 1 · English · Topic 2

A Today you'll learn

  • Understand that naming words (nouns) name people, places, animals, and things
  • Sort words into the four categories: Person, Place, Animal, Thing
  • Spot naming words in simple illustrated sentences

B Let's understand

Everything in the world has a name! Words that name something are called naming words or nouns. A naming word can name a Person (mother, doctor, boy, teacher), a Place (school, park, bedroom, India), an Animal (cat, monkey, elephant, duck), or a Thing (ball, pencil, book, cup). Whenever you can point to something and say "that is a...", you have found a naming word!

C See it step by step

Example 1: In the sentence "The boy went to the park with his dog," find the naming words.
  1. "boy" is a Person.
  2. "park" is a Place.
  3. "dog" is an Animal.
  4. These three words are all naming words.
Example 2: Is "run" a naming word?
  1. "Run" is an action that someone does, not a name of a person, place, animal, or thing.
  2. So "run" is an action word (verb), not a naming word.
